November Arts Calendar for Naugatuck Valley Community College

Waterbury, Conn. – The following is the November arts calendar for Naugatuck Valley Community College:

THURSDAY – SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 6-8
Naugatuck Valley Community College Theatre Department will hold three performances of Niccolo Machiavelli’s “The Mandrake” Thursday-Saturday, November 6, 7 and 8 at 7:00 p.m. in the College’s Playbox Theatre at the Fine Arts Center, 750 Chase Parkway, Waterbury.

In this comedy where “the ends justify the means,” Machiavelli applies the principles of his political treatise “The Prince” to ordinary, seemingly nonpolitical life: Callimaco, a young man, is attracted to young Lucrezia, who is unfortunately married to Nicia, an older man. Thus Callimaco agrees to a plan devised by the Machiavellian figure Ligurio to gain access to Lucrezia.

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 10 & 17
Naugatuck Valley Community College is offering a “master dance” class in hip hop on Monday, November 10, giving college students and members of the community the opportunity to learn from an instructor who has mastered the style.

The class will be held from 4:15-5:15 p.m. in the Dance Studio, Room A404, of the College’s Fine Arts Center, located on its main campus at 750 Chase Parkway, Waterbury. It will be taught by Tiffany Washington, an NVCC Dance graduate who currently teaches dance in Torrington.

The class is $5 for NVCC students and $10 for the general public. Students must be at least 15 years of age to participate. Registration is required. To register, contact Elena Rusnak at (203) 575-8179 or erusnak@nvcc.commnet.edu.

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 16
The Naugatuck Valley Community College Choir will perform in concert with the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra on Sunday, November 16,featuring the work of Bach, Mozart and Corelli.

The 3 p.m. performance will be held in the Mainstage Theatre in the College’s Fine Arts Center, located on its main campus at 750 Chase Parkway, Waterbury.

The Choir will perform Bach’s Cantata 191 “Gloria in Excelsis,” Handel Messiah part I and Corelli Concerto Grosso “Christmas.” The performance includes a pre-concert lecture by Dr. Richard Gard, choir conductor.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 21
The Naugatuck Valley Community College Opera Ensemble will perform “Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris” on Friday, November 21.

The 8 p.m. performance will be presented cabaret style in the Playbox Theatre in the College’s Fine Arts Center, located on its main campus at 750 Chase Parkway, Waterbury.

The concert is an American musical revue of the songs of Jacques Brel, a Belgian singer-songwriter whose quality and style of lyrics are highly regarded by many leading critics of popular music.
