Inaugural Presidential Scholarship Program Announced by Naugatuck Valley Community College

Waterbury, Conn. – Naugatuck Valley Community College will launch a brand new program this year entitled the Presidential Scholarships, beginning with the 2009 spring semester, which will be awarded to students attending public and private high schools within the 22 towns served by the College.

The scholarships are part of a community-based effort towards bridging the relationship between the region’s high schools and the College, defining the College and post-secondary education as a whole, and as a point of destination for young people.

Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D., president of the College, hopes the scholarships will serve as an initiative to encourage high school seniors to expand their horizons while exploring choices for future post-secondary education.

“We want to make the college experience available to high school students in the region that we serve so that they can take part in one course of their choice and see what it’s like to attend a college,” said De Filippis. “All credits earned by the student are transferable to courses at the College. The program is intended to complement the high school learning experience and encourage further pursuit of a college education.”

The scholarship consists of a tuition waiver and book voucher for a course to be taken on the Naugatuck Valley Community College campus. Students must meet certain pre-requisites for enrollment in the course of their choice as determined by the College. The principal of each high school will recommend one student to participate in the scholarship program. Seniors who intend to take courses in the spring 2009 semester must apply and submit their applications to their high school, and their principal must submit one student to the College for consideration by December 1. The application fee is waived.

Credits earned by the student can be applied to any of the 100-plus associate degree programs at the College. In addition, Naugatuck Valley Community College participates in the Guaranteed Admissions Program, another benefit to attending NVCC. This program provides a path for graduates with an associate degree earned at the College for guaranteed admission to UConn or any of the four Connecticut State Universities (CSUs), provided minimum grade point averages and prerequisites are met for participating colleges.
