| NVCC Answers Call For More Entry-level Healthcare Careers
Waterbury, Conn. – Naugatuck Valley Community College has added another entry level healthcare career certificate program to its non-credit roster. The 13-week Health Unit Coordinator Certificate program will begin September 16 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-9:00 p.m.
Health unit coordinators work in hospitals, clinics and a number of other healthcare settings. Some of their daily operations include maintaining patient charts and records, coordinating patient activities for the unit, ordering supplies and communicating with the dietary department.
“This program has been added in response to a growing need for entry-level healthcare positions,” said Pamela Swendsen, nursing continuing education coordinator. “As the demand for nurses goes up, so does the need for all other positions.”
The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts the healthcare industry, which employed 13.5 million people in 2004, will add nearly 3.6 million new jobs by 2014, an increase of 27 percent. Employees already working in the field typically have first crack at promotions.
“Landing an entry-level job in healthcare offers a chance for fast-track career advancement,” said Swendsen. “It’s a great opportunity for someone who’s looking to start a professional career in healthcare without undergoing years of schooling right away.”
Many of the College’s graduates use their NVCC training as a catapult for other healthcare careers. Jessica Hovan, a 4-year veteran of the College’s nurse aide certification program, recently graduated from Southern Connecticut State University with a bachelor of science in nursing.
“I believe becoming a certified nurse’s aide was the most important step I took to begin my future,” said Hovan. “It empowered me to continue my education and to gain more nursing experience.”
Hovan currently works as a registered nurse at Yale-New Haven Hospital.
