| Musicians Need Apply at Naugatuck Valley Community College
Waterbury, Conn. – The Music Department at Naugatuck Valley Community College is welcoming new members to the following ensembles for the 2008-09 season:
The NVCC College Choir
Rehearsals for the NVCC College Choir begin on Tuesday, September 2. The Choir rehearses on two simultaneous tracks and singers may attend either one: Monday 7-10pm or Tuesday and Thursday 11:20 a.m. - 12:40 p.m. Choir can be taken for college credit or as a non-credit community member.
This year the choir will sing Handel’s Messiah and Bach’s Gloria in Excelsis with the Waterbury Symphony in November and the world premiere of Fortune's Bones, a dramatic new work by Ysaye Barnwell and Sweet Honey in the Rock, with the Symphony at the Palace Theater. The NVCC Concert Band
Rehearsals for the 2008-09 NVCC Concert Band, known as the Wind Ensemble of Western Connecticut, begin on Tuesday, September 2 in Woodbury. The 45-member band gives 4 concerts each year with a mix of classics, pops and marches and is looking for players of double reeds, french horn, baritone saxophone and low brass. THE NVCC Jazz Cats
The NVCC Jazz Cats will begin rehearsing from 5:30 - 6:50 p.m. on Wednesdays beginning September 3. Under the direction of Joe Jacovino, the Jazz Cats play 3-6 shows per year and are well known in the community. Players may join for college credit or as non-credit community members. The NVCC Gospel Choir
The NVCC Gospel Choir begins rehearsing from 7:10 – 8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays starting September 2. The choir, which gives two concerts each year, is directed by pianist, singer and conductor James Hurdle. The NVCC Guitar Ensemble
The NVCC Guitar Ensemble begins rehearsing from 5:30-6:30 p.m. on Mondays starting September 11. Players may join to earn college credit or as a non-credit community member. Please contact Professor Morrison at Morrisonguitar@hotmail.com.
The NVCC Opera Ensemble
The NVCC Opera Ensemble begins rehearsing from 7:10-9:10 p.m. on Thursdays starting September 4. Performances will include the 70s hit Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris in a cabaret style this year. The music consists of over 20 solo songs and group songs, creating a story without using scripted lines. Each performer works individually with conductor Dr. Richard Gard to develop a style in portraying one or more solos and aspects of the story. Chamber Music/Jazz Ensemble
The Chamber Music/Jazz Ensemble begins rehearsing from 5:30-6:50 p.m. on Wednesdays starting September 3. The course is designed to place talented student players in bands of 3 to 5 players who then develop their own sound and repertoire, emphasizing jazz or rock depending on the players. Each group is coached by jazz/rock bassist Henry Lugo. It is the goal of the class that players will develop their performance skills and continue to play professional gigs in the area once the class has finished. Only registered music majors may enroll.
