WATERBURY, Connecticut — January 15, 2008 — A full scholarship to pursue an Associates degree in Electronic Engineering Technology that includes the guarantee of a paid internship at Connecticut Light and Power (CL&P) is available starting this fall at Naugatuck Valley Community College (NVCC) in Waterbury.
Fifteen students will be chosen for the scholarship program for the 2008-09 academic year, along with another 15 in the 2009-10 academic year. The scholarship funding of $3,000 per year per student selected comes from the Northeast Utilities Foundation and will cover the cost of tuition and fees. A book allowance will also be provided. Beginning in the fall of 2008, the annual tuition at NVCC for a full time in-state resident will be $2,984.
"It's a partnership between our company and the college that takes NVCC's solid curriculum and makes it even more attractive with the scholarships and the internships," said Raymond P. Necci, president and chief operating officer of CL&P and Yankee Gas. "The result will be a pool of technically qualified people who hopefully want to stay in Connecticut and go to work for CL&P. That's good for us and good for the state."
Students completing the two-year, 67 or 68 credit hours course will have the necessary math and technical skills, along with a clear understanding of what the utility industry offers. They will be considered for employment at CL&P based on academic achievement, internship success and overall performance. They also have the option of transferring to a four year program.
