‘Tropical Blues,’ inspired by NVCC professor’s halfway house experiences, to be performed Feb. 29 to March 3

WATERBURY (Feb. 26, 2007) — Before he became a professor of English at Naugatuck Valley Community, one of the jobs William H. Foster III held was head of security at a halfway house for women.

That’s where he found the inspiration to write “Tropical Blues,” a play that will be presented Feb. 28 to March 3 at NVCC that tells the story of a woman released from prison to a halfway house and her struggle to find love and family.

“The play explores the question of whether family ties, love and friendship can survive the effects of having been in prison,” said Foster, who has written nine other plays as well.

“Tropical Blues” will be presented by NVCC’s Genesis II theater company, which includes students, staff and members of the community. It will also feature performances by members of the NVCC Gospel Chorus.

The play will be held in the Playbox Theatre on NVCC’s main campus, located at 750 Chase Parkway. Each night’s performance begins at 8 p.m. except the March 1 performance, which begins at 7 p.m.

Due to the subject matter, the play contains some content for mature audiences only. Tickets are $10. For information or reservations, call (203) 596-8612.
