Yale vocal ensemble comes to Waterbury Oct. 29
Camerata performance will benefit NVCC’s music scholarship fund
WATERBURY (Oct. 5, 2006) — The prestigious Yale Camerata — a vocal ensemble that has performed with the New Haven Symphony Orchestra and been heard on National Public Radio — will perform in Waterbury on Sunday, Oct. 29.
The Yale Camerata will perform in Waterbury on Sunday, Oct. 29, to help raise funds for the Naugatuck Valley Community College Foundation’s music scholarship fund.
The performance begins at 4 p.m. at the First Congregational Church of Waterbury, 222 West Main Street.
Founded in 1985 by its conductor, Marguerite L. Brooks, the Camerata features approximately sixty singers who are Yale graduate and undergraduate students, faculty, staff, and experienced singers from the New Haven community. Sponsored by the Yale Institute of Sacred Music, it performs a varied spectrum of choral literature.
The Oct. 29 performance will feature music of the Anglican tradition, music by Mendelssohn and even three pieces with a Halloween theme.
Admission is free, but a suggested $10 donation will be accepted to help raise money for the Naugatuck Valley Community College Foundation’s music scholarship fund.
The fund provides assistance for talented music majors at NVCC, who have a special financial burden because they must pay for private lessons each semester in addition to their tuition. The cost of those lessons, which can amount to more than $400 a semester, sometimes forces students with promising talent to forego a career in performing or teaching music.
Last year, the fund helped 12 students pay for those lessons. And this semester, the fund helped seven students, but there are as many as 80 music students each semester who need financial assistance.
