This fall NVCC Continuing Ed offers help with blogs, college essays, conflicts at work and more

WATERBURY (Aug. 2, 2006) — Fall courses in Naugatuck Valley Community College’s Continuing Education program, which offer help with things as diverse as college essays and conflicts at work, are open for registration.

Some classes begin this month, while others begin in September, October, November and December. Interested individuals are urged to register now as programs are sometimes cancelled when people wait until the last minute to sign up.

This fall, NVCC is offering more than 25 new courses designed to help people get ahead or just find more interesting ways to spend their free time. Among the new offerings this fall:

  • Writing College Essays that Shine,” a course that costs $79 and is offered twice, on Sept. 11 and Sept. 27, from 6 to 8 p.m. It will review the four keys to writing a college essay that stands out above the rest: writing from the heart, authenticity, passion, and a clear, conversational style.

  • Using Blogs and Web sites to Enhance Communications with Students,” a course designed for teachers that reviews the benefits of “blogs,” online journals or Web logs, as a collaborative tool for students and teachers. It will include a brief introduction to Web page design tools and content, and students will create their own blog in class. It is offered Dec. 15 from 6 to 9 p.m., and Dec. 16 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. It costs $199 and is worth one state continuing education credit.

  • Conflict Management,” a course for anyone who deals regularly with conflict at work. It will show how to distinguish between beneficial and destructive conflict, how to disagree without creating arguments and how to handle disagreements among others without being drawn in. The course, which costs $115, is offered on Oct. 5 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

NVCC’s Fall 2006 Non-Credit Catalog for Continuing Education, which lists all of the courses available, began arriving this week in mailboxes throughout the 35 communities served by NVCC, from Waterbury to Seymour to Southbury and Danbury to Litchfield.
