PHLEBOTOMY TECHNICIAN 

Considering a career as a Phlebotomist? The role of the Phlebotomy Technician has changed in health care. A Phlebotomy Technician needs to be able to:

  • Collect and prepare for analysis, blood specimens from all types of patients, all age groups, healthy & with different diseases

  • Understand & process Medicare and insurance payor requirements and claims

  • Perform receptionist and scheduling duties

After the phlebotomy technician collects the blood, they may process the specimen using sophisticated laboratory equipment. They usually work under the direction of the Medical Laboratory Scientist. Phlebotomy Technicians must also have an understanding of basic coding and billing procedures. A Phlebotomy Technician must enjoy working with people, work well under pressure, be attentive to detail, and have excellent manual dexterity. To be successful they must also possess computer skills and an aptitude for other high-tech devices. There is both an art and a science necessary to the profession. A Phlebotomy Technician may expect to earn $23,000 - $38,000 in annual salary.

Our 190-hour program will provide the classroom, simulated lab and clinical opportunities for students to meet the growing demands of the role of the Phlebotomy Technician. Topics in the classroom portion of this program include all aspects of Phlebotomy, Safety, Medical Terminology, Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification, Customer Service, effective Communication and Infection Control. In a new state-of-the-art simulated lab, you will practice drawing techniques with different patient populations and develop the confidence and expertise to succeed in the clinical arena. The clinical portion will provide approximately 190 hours of experience in real patient settings and will allow you to practice your phlebotomy skills under the direction of an experienced phlebotomist.

Please note:

  • Attendance at an Information Session is mandatory for all applicants.

  • A high school diploma or GED is required to apply to the program.

  • Students must maintain personal medical insurance coverage and are required to have a current health screening, including up-to-date immunizations

  • Registration for the program is $2,900; an installment plan is available

  • A separate application is required. This application process includes completing the Health Occupations Basic Entrance Test and a personal interview.

  • Clinical sites include Charlotte Hungerford Hospital, Torrington, The Hospital of Central Connecticut, New Britain and Danbury Hospital, Danbury.

Phlebotomy for Working Professionals

Do you need to learn phlebotomy skills as part of your present job or to make you more marketable as an employee?

In this introductory course, topics will include: skin puncture techniques and the equipment needed, special collection procedures, legal and ethical issues, safety concerns, infection control including Standard Precautions, quality assurance, communication skills, and customer relations with diverse populations. Teaching methods include both lecture and supervised hands-on practice in a skills lab setting. The required textbook is included in the cost of the course and provided at the first class session. Appropriate for all levels of health care personnel who would like to learn or improve their skills. Please note: clinical skills are not included in the content of this course. Thirty contact hours will be awarded.

Please note that a background in health care is required to register for this class. This class is a required course for the Patient Care Technician Certificate and must be taken after successful completion of the Certified Nurse Aide course.
