FAQ's:

I’m interested in working in child care how do I get started?

Childcare is an exciting, demanding and very rewarding profession. You may want to consider taking our new course, Child Care Basics, Introduction to the Profession of Child Care (see this page). This course was designed to give just the types of information you would need to get started.

What is a CDA Credential?

The Child Development Associate Credential is awarded to qualified caregivers who work with children from birth to age 5. It is earned by completing the training requirements, demonstrating competence and professional development. Start by determining if you meet eligibility criteria and then register for the Module Series Orientation.

Am I eligible to participate in the Child Development Training Program Modules?

To participate you must:

• Work in a TCPD Priority program that includes a DSS funded center, a current Accreditation Facilitation Project (AFP) selected site, Head Start program or School Readiness Program.

• Be employed in a family child care home, center or group; or

• Be employed in a Head Start or school-age child care program; or

• Be a relative providing care for grandchildren, nieces or nephews; or

• Be a friend or neighbor providing care in the child’s own home; and

• Not have attended any college level classes in any subject or have a degree; or

• Not have already obtained a CDA credential; or

• Not have previously taken the TPCD. Individuals who do not meet the eligibility requirements may register for the training at a fee equal to the sum of the individual offerings.

 

Training for Early Care, Education Providers and Relative Caregivers

  • Are you employed in an early childhood program that cares for children ages 6 weeks to 12 years?
  • Are you a family child care provider?
  • Are you caring for you grandchild, niece or nephew?
  • Have you considered caring for children as a rewarding Career
  • Do you want to learn effective techniques to work effectively with children?
  • Are you interested in obtaining a Child Development Associate Credential (CDA)?
  • Are you a parent and want to learn more about child development and parenting?

If you are a parent or you are caring for other people's children ages 6 weeks to 12 years and want to feel more confident in what you do, the child care training offered at NVCC is for you.

Child Care Basics (20 hours)
Introduction to the Profession of Child Care
The early care a young child receives influences school readiness in important ways. Are you interested in making a difference in a child’s life? This series of classes will focus on basic knowledge and skills needed to enter the child care profession and provide a quality experience for children in your care. There are many options available for employment, from classroom assistant to relative caregiver to agency owner/manager and others. Learn how children develop and how you can contribute to a safe, fun and learning environment. Take what you already know about children and get started on your career in early child education and care.
