General Information
Thank you for your interest in the 2009 Connecticut Motorcycle Rider Education Program at NVCC. Motorcycling is one of the most exciting forms of transportation around. Part of the thrill of motorcycling is the knowledge that you are totally responsible for every action taken from timing each shift to keeping a keen eye out for other motorists. To understand these responsibilities and get the most from your experiences, a Connecticut Motorcycle Rider course is the place to start. Connecticut Rider Education is a statewide program directed by the CT DOT. We provide quality motorcycle training for new, intermediate and experienced riders. Review for your course ahead of time at www.ride4ever.org
- The Basic Rider Course (BRC) is designed to help individuals with little or no riding experience achieve a better understanding of what is involved in operating a motorcycle or scooter. The BRC begins with the development of the fundamental riding skills of turning, shifting, braking and straight-line riding; then it expands on these basic skills into more advanced street riding techniques. The course consists of 22 hours combined classroom and on-cycle instruction. Motorcycles or Scooters are provided
Participants must have a valid CT driver’s license, a motorcycle learner’s permit is not required to take this course and those under 18 must have a parent or legal guardian sign the waiver form. Fee: $200.00 - Student workbook and study questions available at www.ride4ever.org
- The Intermediate Rider Course (IRC) is designed for riders with some riding experience. Riders will improve skills in braking, turning, and evasive maneuvers, and learn “street strategies” necessary for survival. The course consists of 10 hours combined classroom and on-cycle instruction.
Participants must have a valid CT motorcycle permit and use their own street legal motorcycle (no straight pipes) for the course; bikes will be inspected. You must provide proof of motorcycle permit, current motorcycle registration and insurance card. Fee: $115.00 Student workbook and study questions same as BRC available at www.ride4ever.org
- The Experienced Rider Course (ERC) is a one-day course designed to improve rider skills in braking, evasive maneuvers, and turning. It provides the experienced motorcyclist with “street strategies” necessary for survival. This full day course consists of on-cycle instruction using your own street legal motorcycle; bikes will be inspected. Participants must have a valid motorcycle license (driver only) and must provide proof of license, current motorcycle registration, and insurance card. Fee: $85.00 for rider, $20.00 for passenger.
Participants of all courses must properly use the following protective gear!
Helmet (must be DOT or SNELL approved, one will be provided if needed), you must provide eye protection (face shield, goggles or glasses), long-sleeved shirt or jacket, full finger leather gloves, long pants (denim or other heavy material, not nylon), over-the-ankle leather boots with low or no heels.
Be Prepared! Learning to ride a motorcycle demands alertness and some physical exertion. We rarely cancel due to weather – all on-cycle sessions will run rain or shine. Bring rain gear, warm clothes for cold days, water and a snack. If you have any health issues please inform the instructor in the classroom. You will need a pen or pencil for the classroom.
You must attend and participate in ALL sessions, IN SEQUENCE. No exceptions will be made. Any absence will require you to register for another course, pay again and start from the beginning. If you know you will miss a session due to a vacation, wedding or whatever, do not enroll in that time slot. Choose another. No refunds will be issued
Classroom sessions will be held in Ekstrom Hall on the fifth Floor, room E504, 505, or 506. Please Be On Time.
If you are late for any classroom or on-cycle session the instructor can turn you away. Be on time.

Student Information Notice
The Basic Rider Course is designed for individuals with little or no riding experience. The BRC presents skills that, when practiced by the participant, are necessary for survival on the street. Since the curriculum progresses at an aggressive pace, you should be aware of the following:
- You should come to class in good physical condition, you will be expected to be able to sustain moderate physical exertion for a period of up to seven hours, so be well rested, attend and participate in ALL sessions and PLEASE BE ON TIME! If you are late for any classroom or on-cycle session the instructor can turn you away. If you have any health issues that we should be aware of please inform the instructor when you arrive in the first classroom. Bring something to write with (pen or pencil) to the classroom sessions.
- Riding a motorcycle is much more difficult than riding a bicycle or operating a car. It involves a great deal of hand and eye coordination. You must have the ability to balance a two-wheeled vehicle such as a bicycle. If not, PLEASE practice before attending the course.
- You will be required to push a motorcycle or scooter.
- Realize that not everyone successfully completes this course. On average, about 85% of BRC enrollees are successful. All participants will leave the course with a better understanding of how motorcycles interact with traffic and the environment, and their responsibilities as a rider.
- During the course, you may discover, or be told, that riding a motorcycle is not for you. For your safety and the safety of others, the instructor may remove you from the course.
- The courses are conducted in ALL weather conditions; come to each session PREPARED!
- Any unsafe acts will result in dismissal of the student from the course.
- Be aware that operating any vehicle brings with it both responsibility and risk. As with other human endeavors, the possibility of being seriously hurt or killed is always present.
