Contact and Hours of Operation

The Public Safety Department is located on the main campus of NVCC at Room 122 of the CORE Building.

The department may be reached from off campus by dialing:

(203) 575-8113 – ROUTINE CALLS
(203) 575-8112 – EMERGENCY NEEDS

On campus utilize the extensions 8113 or 8112 only.

The department is staffed each calendar day for the entire twenty–four (24) hour day.

Mission Statement

The Public Safety Department at NVCC provides the campus community with proactive, professional policing services. As an integral link in the learning environment the Department responds to the changing needs of the college by stressing prevention above response, planning above reaction and service to all.

Responsibilities

The Public Safety Department is responsible for the police and safety functions on all properties owned and operated by NVCC and those of the individuals – staff, faculty, students and all others – who are the consumers of the NVCC product.

This department will be the primary responder to and maintain responsibility for all criminal and motor vehicle acts and investigations on NVCC properties. When necessary the Connecticut State Police, Chief States Attorney, Waterbury Fire Department and other local, state and federal agencies will support and assist this department in order to assure complete and thorough investigative findings.

Personnel

The Public Safety Department is composed of sworn Police Officers, Building & Grounds Officers and Telecommunications Operators.

Sworn Police Officers are trained at the State of Connecticut Police Officers Standards & Training Council Academy and have full police powers and authority on all NVCC properties. Building & Grounds Officers may enforce campus safety and traffic policies and assist sworn officers in all matters of safety and investigations.

Weapons \ Alcohol \ Illegal Drugs

Weapons of any kind are not allowed on the campus. Police Officers and persons with state and local permits are urged to contact the Campus Public Safety Department concerning the carrying of their weapons on campus. Also, consult the Student Handbook for the Policy of the Board of Trustees for Community-Technical Colleges (CTC) concerning weapons.

Alcoholic beverages and illegal drugs of any kind are not allowed on the campus. Also, consult the Student Handbook for the Policy of Board of Trustees for CTC concerning the possession of drugs and alcohol. Possession of illegal drugs or alcohol may result in prosecution and/or confiscation and referral for disciplinary action.

Sexual Assault

Sexual Assault is a heinous and often unreported crime. The Public Safety Department urges any individual who experiences such an act to report the incident to the department or another college service as soon as possible.

Sexual assault is any actual or attempted non – consensual sexual activity including but not limited to intercourse, sexual touching, exhibitionism or sexual language of a threatening nature. Force, coercion or threat (actual or implied) often accompanies sexual assault. The perpetrator may be known or unknown to the victim and might involve “ date rape.”

Escort Service

The Public Safety Department provides an escort service to students and staff requesting such assistance by calling Extension 8113 or using nearest assistance phones located in elevator lobbies around campus. An officer will meet the student at the phone from which he/she are calling and provide the escort. This service is free of charge.

Student Parking

Students do not need NVCC parking permits. Students are prohibited from parking in any location designated Faculty/Staff or Visitor and may use all other available parking areas.

How to Report a Crime

The Public Safety Department encourages all persons to report suspicious persons or acts of a criminal nature while on campus. The following suggestions may be used for all acts of a criminal nature. All information is kept confidential.

  1. Go to any assistance phone, raise the handset or any office phone and dial extension 8113, for routine calls or 8112, for emergency calls.
  2. Give the person who answers the phone the following information:
    1. name of person making the complaint
    2. your current location
    3. nature of complaint
    4. name and description of persons involved
    5. direction of travel (if known)
    6. time of occurrence
    7. injuries (if any)
  3. Stay near that phone and an officer will assist you.
  4. When speaking with the officer, please try to remember as much information as possible to relay to the responding officer - e.g. description of person, including hair color, clothing, skin color, etc.
